Understanding the Aurora
Kp Index: A 0–9 scale measuring planetary geomagnetic disturbance. Higher values indicate more aurora activity and visibility at lower latitudes.
What causes aurora? Solar wind interacts with Earth's magnetic field, exciting atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen, producing the green and red lights.
Best viewing conditions: Clear skies, minimal light pollution, and locations away from cities. Aurora is most active during solar maximum cycles (about every 11 years).
