Data Sources & Attribution

A public accounting of the named weather, environmental, hazard, and map sources used by WeatherPerch, together with applicable attribution and licensing notices. This page is separate from the Privacy Policy: source attribution identifies data origin and does not describe a provider's access to personal information. For our activity-scoring methodology, see /methodology.

Primary weather data

Current conditions, forecasts, air quality, marine conditions, and 20-year climate normals come from Open-Meteo's free hosted API (CC BY 4.0). A second vendor, OpenWeatherMap, and a US-only third vendor, NWS (api.weather.gov), feed a durable archival pipeline used for forecast-accuracy verification — see /reports/forecast-confidence. WeatherAPI.com and Visual Crossing are configured as additional forecast fallbacks.

Hazard & alert data

Severe weather alerts and nationwide news: NOAA/NWS (US-only, public domain). Hurricanes: NOAA National Hurricane Center. Earthquakes and volcanoes: USGS. Tsunami alerts: NOAA Tsunami Warning Centers. Airport/flight-delay status: FAA National Airspace System Status feed (US-only). Aurora forecasts: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.

Maps

Base map tiles: OpenStreetMap (ODbL, © OpenStreetMap contributors). Weather overlay tiles: OpenWeatherMap.

Update frequency

Live user-facing requests are cached for 5 minutes (severe alerts) to 1 hour (forecasts) — see our engineering documentation for the exact schedule per data type. A separate hourly job archives snapshots from every vendor for accuracy tracking, independent of what a visitor sees live.

Limitations

All forecast and hazard data is estimated by third parties and can be delayed, incomplete, or wrong — see our Weather & Safety Disclaimer. WeatherPerch does not independently verify upstream provider data and does not guarantee accuracy, completeness, or timeliness for any location.

Required attribution and licensing notices
