Privacy Policy

1. Information We Collect

We collect the location you search for (city name, ZIP, or coordinates) solely to fetch a forecast for that spot. If you tap "Use my location," your browser will ask your permission first — we only receive your coordinates if you grant it, and we round them to about a kilometer of precision before using them for anything; we never store this location or tie it to your identity. We do not use cookies and we do not run any analytics or tracking service today. Your device's IP address is processed transiently to prevent abuse of our weather API (see "IP Addresses" below). A theme preference and your last-searched location are stored only in your browser's local storage — never sent to us — so the site remembers your settings between visits.

2. How We Use Your Information

Location data you search is used only to request current conditions and forecasts from our weather data providers, and to power our public directory of forecast pages by city. We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers.

3. Third-Party Services

We share the minimum data needed (typically just latitude/longitude) with the following service providers to operate the site:

  • Open-Meteo — weather, air quality, and marine forecast data
  • OpenWeatherMap — supplementary weather data
  • NWS (National Weather Service, api.weather.gov) — severe weather alerts for US locations
  • Cloudflare — hosting, content delivery, and application database (Workers, D1, KV)
  • Upstash — short-lived caching of forecast data and abuse-prevention rate limiting (Redis)
  • OpenStreetMap — map tiles for the small map shown after you use "Use my location" (only your rounded coordinates are sent, and only when that feature is used)

Optional account features (e.g. saved locations) are planned but not yet available. If and when they launch, we'll use Clerk as our authentication provider, and this policy will be updated before that data is collected from anyone.

4. Data Retention

Weather data is cached briefly (5 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the type of data) and then discarded. Searched locations (place name and coordinates only — never tied to an individual visitor, since we don't have user accounts yet) are kept in our directory indefinitely so we can serve fast, pre-built forecast pages for popular cities; we don't currently auto-delete these. Locations from "Use my location" are the exception: those are never added to this directory and are discarded as soon as your forecast is fetched. If you'd like a location removed from our directory, contact us using the details below.

5. IP Addresses

We process your IP address only to apply a short-lived rate limit that prevents abuse of our weather API. We don't store your IP address directly — it's converted to a one-way hash before use, the hash is kept for about 60 seconds, and it is never linked to your searches or location data.

6. Your Rights

We don't currently require an account to use WeatherPerch, and we don't knowingly retain any data tied to a specific person. If that changes (for example, once optional account features launch), you'll be able to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your account data by contacting us below; we'll also add self-service tools for this before account features go live. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws like the GDPR or CCPA/CPRA — reach out and we'll respond within a reasonable time, generally 30 days.

7. Contact Us

If you have questions about this privacy policy, or want a searched location removed from our directory, please contact us at privacy@weatherperch.com
