It’s easy to assume weather forecasting has existed forever in some form — humans have always cared what tomorrow’s sky would do. But the forecast as we actually recognize it, a genuine attempt to predict conditions hours or days out using data rather than folklore, is a surprisingly recent invention.
Ancient and pre-modern cultures didn’t lack weather knowledge — sailors, farmers, and shepherds developed genuinely sophisticated pattern-recognition systems over generations, reading cloud shapes, animal behavior, and wind shifts. Some of these folk rules hold up surprisingly well (“red sky at night” tracks real atmospheric optics about high pressure and dry air to the west). But this was observation of recurring patterns, not prediction from data — there was no mechanism to know what was happening a hundred miles away, which is the entire foundation modern forecasting depends on.
The real turning point wasn’t a weather discovery at all — it was the telegraph. For the first time, weather observations from distant locations could reach a central point faster than the weather itself traveled. Suddenly you could know a storm was battering a city 200 miles west of you before it arrived at your door. This single infrastructure shift is what made forecasting, as opposed to pure observation, technically possible for the first time in history.
Britain’s Robert FitzRoy — yes, the same FitzRoy who captained Darwin’s HMS Beagle — used this telegraph network to produce what’s widely credited as the first modern daily weather forecasts, published in The Times starting in 1861. The term “forecast” itself is often attributed directly to him.
Before the telegraph, no forecast could ever outrun the weather it was trying to predict. That’s the entire reason forecasting didn’t exist earlier — not a lack of scientific understanding, but a lack of infrastructure.
The next century layered on radiosondes (weather balloons, from the 1930s), radar adapted from WWII military technology (1940s–50s), the first weather satellites (TIROS-1, 1960), and finally the numerical weather prediction models — genuine physics simulations of the atmosphere — that only became computationally possible with the rise of powerful computing in the latter half of the 20th century. Each leap didn’t just add data; it added lead time, pushing useful forecasts from “hours” to “a reliable week.”
The daily forecast you barely think about while getting dressed is younger than the automobile. It took a telegraph network, two world wars’ worth of radar technology, and the birth of supercomputing to get from “watch the clouds and guess” to “80% chance of rain starting around 3pm.” That’s a genuinely fast pace of progress for something this embedded in daily life.
