I once drove from a sunny 75°F starting point to a sunny 80°F destination and nearly got stuck for a night in a mountain pass that decided, entirely on its own, to have a blizzard in the middle of the route. Both endpoints were fine. The 200 miles in between were not. This is an extremely common and extremely avoidable mistake.
Most people check the weather for where they’re leaving and where they’re arriving, because those are the two places they’re actually thinking about. But a long drive can pass through multiple distinct weather systems, elevation changes, and microclimates that have nothing to do with either endpoint’s forecast. Mountain passes in particular are notorious for this — a route can gain thousands of feet of elevation in a short stretch, and (see the hiking checklist) elevation changes the weather dramatically and fast.
Elevation profile of the route, not just distance. If you’re crossing any significant mountain range or pass, check conditions specifically for that segment, separately from your origin and destination.
Timing against the drive, not just the day. If you’re driving through a storm system’s path, the relevant question isn’t “what’s the weather today” — it’s “where will the storm be when I’m driving through that specific stretch.” A storm system’s own forecasted movement matters as much as its current position.
Wind, specifically for exposed stretches. High-profile vehicles (RVs, trucks with trailers, roof cargo) are meaningfully more vulnerable to strong crosswinds on open highway stretches — bridges and exposed plains are the classic trouble spots.
Checking the weather at your origin and destination and skipping everything in between is like reading the first and last page of a book and assuming you know the plot.
Most route-planning apps now let you check conditions along a multi-point route rather than just two endpoints — use it. If yours doesn’t, manually check the forecast for two or three towns along the way, prioritizing any elevation changes or known weather-prone stretches (mountain passes, coastal fog corridors, tornado-prone plains in season).
A road trip’s weather risk usually isn’t at either end — it’s in the middle, in the stretch you didn’t think to check because you weren’t planning to stop there. Check the route, not just the destinations, especially if elevation or a known weather corridor is involved.
