The Match We Watched Outside Instead of in the Rain

Forty of us, one back garden, a big screen borrowed from a neighbour, and a forecast that decided the whole thing was worth the risk.

My brother-in-law has hosted a garden watch party for every big match for as long as I can remember, and every single year there’s the same argument in the family group chat about whether to risk the garden or default to his front room, which fits maybe twelve people comfortably and, on match day, ends up hosting closer to thirty.

This year the forecast three days out looked genuinely rough — rain more or less all day, the kind of prediction that would normally have settled the argument in the front room’s favour without much discussion. But the hourly view told a much more specific story: a dry window opening up right around throw-in time and holding for roughly three hours before the rain came back, which happened to line up almost exactly with the match plus the inevitable extra time everyone was already dreading.

We took the risk. Screen went up in the garden, borrowed gazebo up as a just-in-case, forty people crammed onto whatever seating existed. The match ran the full ninety minutes plus a genuinely unnecessary amount of stoppage time, and the rain held off for every single minute of it, arriving with almost comedic precision about four minutes after the final whistle, as everyone was already halfway to the gazebo with their pints in hand.

My brother-in-law has since declared this “the year we trusted the app instead of Uncle Pádraig’s knee,” which is a real sentence that got said out loud at a family gathering and which I am now contractually obligated to remind him of every year going forward.

If your family’s got a similar garden-versus-front-room argument for every big occasion, check the hourly forecast next time instead of just the daily summary — the daily view would’ve had us crammed into that front room for no reason at all. It’s the same habit that got me a clear cliff walk instead of a foggy one a few months earlier — check the hourly, not just the icon. And if this saves someone else’s garden watch party, send it their way before the next big match.
