Here’s a sentence that trips people up every spring: you can get sunburned on a cool, overcast day faster than on a hot, hazy one. It sounds wrong. It isn’t. The UV index and the temperature are measuring two almost entirely unrelated things, and treating them as a package deal is how people end up with a farmer’s tan in March.
The UV index tracks the intensity of ultraviolet radiation reaching the ground — a completely different phenomenon from air temperature, which is mostly about how much the air itself has been heated. UV intensity depends on the sun’s angle (higher at midday and in summer), altitude (higher UV at elevation, since there’s less atmosphere to filter it), and how much of it clouds and haze are blocking.
That last part is the trap: clouds block visible light and make a day feel cooler and duller, but a thin or broken cloud layer often does very little to block UV. You lose the visual cue that usually reminds you to care (bright, hot sun) while keeping most of the actual radiation.
Runners and hikers are the classic victims here, because both activities often happen at elevation or in the early-to-mid morning when the temperature still feels mild but the sun angle is already climbing. A cool 60°F trail run at 9am in the mountains can carry a higher UV index than a sweltering 90°F afternoon at sea level with a hazy sky.
Temperature tells you how the air feels. UV index tells you what the sun is doing to your skin. They agree often enough to fool you into thinking they’re the same number.
Stop using “does it feel hot” as your sunscreen trigger. Check the actual UV index, especially at elevation or in spring and early summer when the sun angle is climbing but temperatures haven’t caught up yet. Your skin doesn’t care what the air feels like — it only cares what’s hitting it.
