What should I do if someone is struck by lightning?

Call emergency services immediately and make sure you are not still exposed to lightning. A person struck by lightning does not carry an electrical charge, so it is safe to touch them. Check breathing and pulse, begin CPR if needed, and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Even if the person is awake, they need urgent medical assessment because lightning can cause cardiac, neurological, burn, and fall injuries.
