If a Hurricane Is Approaching Your Area
- Follow evacuation orders from local officials immediately — do not wait to "see how bad it gets."
- Storm surge, not wind, causes the most hurricane deaths — know if you're in a surge evacuation zone before the season starts.
- Secure or bring in outdoor furniture and objects that could become projectiles in high wind.
- Have at least 3 days of water, food, and medication on hand if you're sheltering in place.
