Weather apps and news broadcasts love a looping satellite animation — clouds swirling across a map, genuinely mesmerizing, genuinely under-explained. Most viewers absorb a vague sense of “storm moving that way” and move on without extracting nearly as much real information as the loop actually contains.
Visible imagery is literally a photograph — reflected sunlight, which means it only works during daylight and goes dark at night. It shows cloud texture and shape clearly but can’t distinguish cloud height well.
Infrared imagery measures heat radiating from cloud tops, works day or night, and — critically — lets you estimate cloud height and storm intensity, because colder cloud tops (typically shown in more dramatic colors on enhanced IR imagery) generally mean taller, more powerful storms. This is the one worth learning to read, since it works around the clock and actually encodes storm strength.
Water vapor imagery shows atmospheric moisture at mid-to-upper levels, even where there’s no cloud cover at all — useful for tracking moisture plumes and jet stream position, genuinely more advanced but worth knowing exists.
Rotation. A cloud mass developing a visible spin, especially in infrared imagery, is one of the clearer visual signs of an organizing, strengthening storm system — this is genuinely how meteorologists spot developing tropical systems before other data confirms it.
Cloud top brightness/color in enhanced IR. The more dramatic colors (often reds, purples, whites in enhanced color scales) mark the coldest, highest cloud tops — the strongest, most intense parts of a storm system. Watching those colors expand or intensify through a loop is watching a storm actually strengthen in close to real time.
A satellite loop isn’t just “storm moving this direction.” It’s showing you the storm’s actual structure and intensity changing, if you know which visual cues to track.
Speed of movement across the loop, compared to your own location — this is the closest thing to a rough personal ETA you can eyeball directly, though it’s genuinely rougher than a proper timed forecast.
A satellite loop is a genuinely information-dense tool, not just a pretty animation — infrared imagery specifically lets you estimate storm intensity via cloud-top temperature, and watching for rotation and color intensification turns passive viewing into an actual read on whether a system is strengthening, weakening, or just drifting through.
