Thunderstorm safety advice has been passed down so many times, by so many well-meaning people, that a lot of it has drifted from “roughly true” to “actively dangerous.” Let’s fix a few of the big ones.
This one’s everywhere, and it’s wrong for a satisfying reason: it’s not the rubber tires doing the protecting, it’s the metal shell of the car. A vehicle acts like a Faraday cage — if lightning strikes it, the charge travels through the metal frame and around the outside of the car rather than through the passengers inside. The tires are almost irrelevant. This is also why convertibles and motorcycles don’t offer the same protection, tires or not.
Lightning can strike well outside the rain shaft of a storm — commonly cited estimates put the safe range at 10+ miles from the storm’s visible edge for a “bolt from the blue” strike. If you can hear thunder, you’re already within striking distance, rain or no rain. The old rule “when thunder roars, go indoors” exists precisely because waiting for rain is waiting too long.
This used to be common advice and it’s now actively discouraged, because lying flat increases the amount of your body in contact with the ground, which increases your exposure to ground current — a real and underrated hazard where the electrical charge spreads outward through the earth after a nearby strike. The current advice is the “lightning crouch”: feet together, crouched low, minimizing ground contact — and honestly, just get inside a real building instead if you possibly can.
It’s serious, but the survival rate is actually around 90% in places with good emergency response. That’s not a reason to be cavalier — survivors frequently deal with long-term neurological and cardiac effects — but the “instant death” framing undersells why prevention (getting indoors early) matters more than the myth suggests, since the aftermath is often a long recovery rather than a clean escape.
The safest place during a thunderstorm isn’t “somewhere clever.” It’s inside a substantial building, away from windows, full stop.
Sheltering under a tall, isolated tree is one of the most consistently dangerous choices during a storm — tall isolated objects are exactly what lightning preferentially strikes, and being near the trunk when it’s hit puts you at serious risk from both the direct strike and ground current radiating outward from the base.
Most thunderstorm folklore has a kernel of truth wrapped in an outdated or incomplete explanation. The actual rule is simpler than any of the myths: get inside a real building the moment you hear thunder, and don’t wait for rain to convince you it’s serious.
